It is said that famous American architect, adventurer and entrepreneur Addison Mizner (1872–1933) once jokingly quipped “Where there’s a will, there’s a law suit”. We disagree! Wills written by our professionally qualified and regulated will writing experts are legally valid and can be relied on completely. It is for this reason that IWC support some form of regulation in our industry and see it as a way of maintaining high standards for our customers.
This is why we are so proud to employ consultants that are members of the Society of Will Writers and Estate Planning Practitioners.
Many people ask us about membership of the society and why we feel that membership of it is so important. To answer that question, it is important to understand a little more about this important Society.
The Society of Will Writers is a relatively new professional organisation having been set up in 1994. It serves several important functions:
1. it works hard to promote the importance of writing a valid will to avoid the problems and distress involved in intestacy and to ensure that someone’s assets are distributed precisely in the way they want them to, after they die;
2. the society vets everyone applying for membership, ensuring that they meet ongoing proficiency standards and undertake continuing professional development;
3. the society also provides a valuable complaints resolution service for clients and members, should one be needed;
This means that the society has a dual role – to protect the public and also to serve the interests of professionals in this field. In this way the society raises standards and improves customer confidence in the will writing profession.
This regulatory body also provides:-
Identification – Society members can be identified through the use of one of the following sets of designatory letters – Cmpn.SWW, FSWW, ASWW, MSWW or Aff.SWW.;
Insurance – Consultants who are regulated by the society must hold full professional indemnity insurance;
Compliance – Members of the Society must adhere to a comprehensive Code of Practice, ethics and philosophy which puts the consumer at the centre of everything they do;
Complaints – There is a well-established complaints procedure run by experts who are able to resolve complaints rapidly and fairly;
Membership – Membership is not straightforward. New members have to go through a robust application process. Only Members can use the “Seal” of the Society, the approved wording and the designatory letters denoting their membership grade.
Will Writing is certainly is a vitally important profession. Members of The Society of Will Writers provide legally valid wills, in which their clients can have complete confidence and that would even impress Addison Mizner.
